Volunteers

Work with low income refugees from Central America and around the world.

Learn how the immigration legal system works.

Make a difference in our community.

We depend heavily on volunteers here at EBSC--in fact, we couldn't get along without them! Volunteers are a large part of what enables us to serve as many people as we do with a staff as small as we have.

We have lots of things for you to do, depending on your skills, interests, and availability. Possibilities include, but are definitely not limited to:

  • Doing intake and filling out paperwork for clients
  • Translating documents
  • Helping with answering phones, running errands, etc.
  • Working on fundraising and outreach projects
  • Writing articles for our newsletter, the Exodus
  • Serving as a translater during an asylum interview
  • Accompanying and advocating for asylum-seekers and immigrants during interviews and appointments
  • Helping to sell crafts
Spanish is helpful, particularly if you would like to work with clients, but is not required. We have plenty of tasks and projects that need doing that do not require a second language. If you do speak Spanish or another language fluently, we are always looking for people to serve as interpreters and translators.

If you are a UC Berkeley student, you may be eligible to get academic credit for your volunteer hours through the Ethnic Studies Department.

Special opportunities are available to law students, who may work with our Asylum Coordinator, Michael Smith, to represent clients who are seeking political asylum.

If you are interested in volunteering for EBSC, please call (510) 540-5296, email volunteer@eastbaysanctuary.org, or come by the office and ask for Sr. Maureen.  You can also download a volunteer application, fill it out and mail or email it in, and we will contact you.  The application is available in Word format and as a PDF.  Send mail to East Bay Sanctuary Covenant, attn: volunteer, 2362 Bancroft Way, Berkeley, CA  94704.

We need your help. We can't do it without you.
