EBSC sells beautiful crafts handmade by women's cooperatives in Central America and Asia. Crafts for sale include weavings, tote bags and purses, dolls, Christmas tree ornaments, and more. We also have available two books by one of our full time volunteers, Michael Smith. The books, Sanctuary Stories and The Nun and the Anarchist, are based on Michael's experiences working with EBSC over many years. Proceeds from the sales support EBSC's work. Craft sales also support the cooperatives.
In addition to our annual crafts fair, held in December, crafts and literature are available for sale year-round in our office at very reasonable prices.
Please stop by for a look the next time you need to purchase a gift
for a birthday or other special event! Or, to view a more
extensive collection that what is available in the office or to place a
special order, contact Sandy Hunter at (510) 524-7989.

Sanctuary Stories by Michael Smith. Sanctuary Stories is a collection of eighteen short stories and five essays focusing on the lives of Central Americans--people who might be washing dishes in our favorite restaurants, harvesting our crops, cleaning our houses, and taking care of our children. In this book, Michael Smith gives these refugees names, gives them faces, and without a hint of condescension, gives them dignity. The stories range from the depiction of the plight of Central Americans in their home countries to their flight to the United States and the life they experience in this country. Sanctuary Stories adds a necessary and compassionate dimension to the current national debate about the rights of aliens. Copyright 1996, Bilingual Press. Michael Smith is EBSC's Asylum Coordinator. $20.00 |

The Nun and the Anarchist by Michael Smith. In this collection of biographical short stories, based on his work with refugees seeking asylum in the U.S., Michael Smith takes us into the hearts and minds of people persecuted by their own government. Set in Africa and Latin America, these are stories of suffering and redemption, terror and survival, oppression and the indomitable human spirit. "These are not the stories of people to be pitied," Smith says in his preface, "but people to be admired. These are people who have something to teach us about courage and dignity and the way the world works, if we will only have the patience to listen." In clear, evocative prose, Michael Smith transmits what he has heard, and the reader who accompanies this powerful witness to the human experience will be richly rewarded. | Burmese dolls. These dolls from the WEAVE cooperative
are handmade by Karen craftswomen living in a refugee camp on the
Thai-Burma border. For each doll WEAVE sells, another doll is made for
the nursery schools in the camp. Because of persistent abuse by the
Burmese government, many people from the Karen ethnic group now live as
refugees in Thailand. Dolls' clothing color varies. Some have short
hair and some have pigtails. The dolls are approximately 15" high. $25.00 View larger image View additional dolls |
